Are you looking for the place for 1-day ice climbing?
Our 1-day ice climbing program at the frozen Butakovskiy waterfall is perfect for both beginners and experienced climbers.
We will meet you in city and help you get to the waterfall. During the program you will learn the basic fundamentals of ice climbing and how to climb with ice axes. You will learn to place ice screws, make Abalakov's thread for descending from ice routes. More advanced ice climbers will improve their skills.

Butakovskiy waterfall
Butakovskiy waterfall is a picturesque place, which is located near Almaty (1.5-2 hours from the city) in the Butakovskiy gorge. The Butakovskiy waterfall (or just Butakovka) beckons outdoor enthusiasts with its scenery and convenient location. The well-defined footpath makes for an easy approach, perfect for a day trip. The climbing terrain at Butakovka is predominantly granite, offering a good overall experience.
The location provides great opportunities for climbing during the year.
In summer, you can do rock climbing here. There are 19 sport climbing routes ranging from 5c to 8a on the French grading system.
In winter and spring, the waterfall freezes providing excellent opportunities for ice climbing and mixed climbing.
Moreover, there are 10 bolted routes for drytooling up to D9 grade, which you can climb from autumn till spring.
The location provides great opportunities for climbing during the year.

- Program schedule
- 8:00 - Meeting in Almaty. The road to the waterfall is about 1 hour drive and 40 minutes walk
- 10:00 - 16:00 - Intro to ice climbing / climbing. Start with simple routes, climb with top rope, learn how to work with crampons and ice tools, set ice screws, make Abalakov's threads (V-thread/A-thread) for abseiling.
