Tamgaly Tas
Tamgaly Tas, located 120km north of Almaty on the right bank of the Ili River (it's a steppe area), is distinct from the famous petroglyph site "Tamgaly" (or Tanbaly). With its towering rock walls overlooking the Ili River, Tamgaly Tas has been a magnet for rock climbers since the 1970s. Here you can find about 200 routes from 5a to 8a grades.
There are some trad routes and multipitches as well. The place offers a mix of climbing styles, from smooth slabs and vertical faces to a little bit crack climbs.
Butakovskiy waterfall
Butakovskiy waterfall is a picturesque place, which is located near Almaty (1.5-2 hours from the city) in the Butakovskiy gorge. The Butakovskiy waterfall (or just Butakovka) beckons outdoor enthusiasts with its scenery and convenient location. The well-defined footpath makes for an easy approach, perfect for a day trip. The climbing terrain at Butakovka is predominantly granite, offering a good overall experience. The location provides great opportunities for climbing during the year. In summer, you can do rock climbing here. There are 19 sport climbing routes ranging from 5c to 8a on the French grading system.
In winter and spring, the waterfall freezes providing excellent opportunities for ice climbing and mixed climbing. Moreover, there are 10 bolted routes for drytooling up to D9 grade, which you can climb from autumn till spring.
Tuyuk-Su
Tuyuk-Su is a gorge near Almaty city. It is located in the central part of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, the northernmost ridge of the Tien Shan.
There are about 20 routes for rock and trad climbing from 5b to 7c grades, there's something for everyone. Moreover, here you can climb dozens of interesting alpine climbing routes and multipithches. The rocks are composed of granite, slate and gabbro. The best season for climbing here is Summer.
